Editing Net Defense Security Settings

When Net Defense finds a new .dll file, it can ask if you want to allow the file to run. A .dll file is a file that is linked to a program when it is loaded or run.

To edit Net Defense security settings:

1       Click the Settings button.

2       Click Net Defense, then click the Security tab.

3       To block protocol drivers when they access the network, select Enable driver level protection. Net Defense asks for your permission when drivers attempt to access the network.

4       To allow Net Defense to determine which .dll files are used by which programs, and to block any .dll files that are not associated with a program, select Enable dll authentication.

When Net Defense finds a new .dll file, you are asked to allow the .dll file to run. You can save your choice for the future, or you can choose that Net Defense will ask you each time the .dll file attempts to access the network.

5       If you selected Enable dll authentication, select Automatically allow known dlls  to allow Net Defense to keep a list of known .dll files and allow those files access to the network.

6       To reset the Net Defense Internet cache, click Reset all fingerprints for all applications.

When a program accesses the Internet, Net Defense stores the details about the files for the program. The next time that program attempts to access the network, if its files have changed, Net Defense asks you what to do.

You can clear the details from the cache. Clearing the cache guards against items that may hide itself by inserting a bit of malicious code into a common program that accesses the Internet. By notifying you that the program has changed, you have the opportunity to decide whether that change was expected.

7       Click OK.
